▣ Rockford, IL · A Midwest Box Refinery

Every gaylord deserves a second, third, and fourth life.

Illinois Boxes Recycle is a Rockford-based gaylord box refinery. We buy, sell, recondition, recycle, and haul industrial cardboard across the Midwest — keeping millions of pounds out of landfills and putting them back to work in factories that need them.

What we do

One yard. Six services. Zero landfill detours.

Most cardboard yards do one job: bale and ship. We do six. Our Rockford facility is part receiving dock, part inspection line, part refinishing shop, and part dispatch hub — all wired around a single idea: a gaylord box should never die after one trip.

  • Grade-A reconditioned boxes that ship same-week
  • Bulk buying programs for warehouses, OEMs, and 3PLs
  • Pickup routes across IL, WI, IA, IN, and MI
  • Custom die-cuts and triple-wall builds when stock won't do

Why used wins

A new gaylord costs a tree. A reused one costs a coffee.

A second life, stamped№ 06

Manufacturing one new gaylord box burns roughly 30 kWh of energy, 7 lbs of CO₂, and several gallons of process water — even before it leaves the mill. Every time we put a used box back into circulation, all of that stays in the ground.

That math is the entire business model. We don't sell "sustainability" as a marketing line. We sell boxes — and because they're already made, the sustainability is built in.

Who buys from us

The industries that keep our trailers moving.

Automotive & stamping

Triple-wall heavy duty for castings, fasteners, stamped parts — 22% of our outbound by volume.

Polymer & resin

Octagonal builds and FDA-lined gaylords for pellets, powders, flake. 18% of outbound.

Food & beverage bulk

Certified-new boxes with food-grade liners, brewing grains, spice bulk. 12% of outbound.

3PL & contract logistics

Recurring closed-loop programs across the Midwest. 14% of outbound, but 30% of standing orders.

Recycling co-ops

Both a seller (collection programs) and a buyer (recycling service).

Pharma & medical

Cleanroom-defensible new boxes with documented chain-of-custody.

Aerospace components

Anti-static liners, dimensional precision, inspection-friendly packaging.

Textile & soft goods

Tall builds for fluffy product where cube efficiency matters more than weight.

Agriculture inputs

Seed, fertilizer, ag-chemical bulk packaging in heavy triple wall.

The remaining 4% includes everything from museum archive packaging to a biotech startup that bought 80 octabins for a vertical farming pilot. We say yes to weird.

Why customers stay

Six reasons we hold contracts for years, not quarters.

01
Honest grading, audited

Our A/B/C grades match the box on your dock. We run blind cross-grade audits monthly; agreement between graders sits at 93%.

02
Same-week dispatch

Most in-stock used orders ship inside five business days. New-box mill orders land in 3-7 days. Custom builds in 7-10.

03
Five-state routed coverage

Weekly routed pickups across IL/WI/IA/IN/MI plus carrier partnerships for the lower 48. About 30% of outbound runs as a swap.

04
Real reconditioning

Our refinishing line saves about 18% of inbound that other yards would scrap. Same boxes ship out as B-grade for half the price of new.

05
Documented sustainability

94.1% audited diversion rate. Embodied carbon math drawn from EPA WARM. ESG-ready reporting on request.

06
Boring paperwork, done right

Per-customer BOL translation. Audit-ready chain-of-custody on recycle streams. Net-30 standard, net-60 by arrangement.

In their words

What four years of customers sound like.

Quote in an hour, pickup in a week, and the grade printed on the invoice matches what shows up. That's not normal in this industry.
Procurement manager, central Iowa polymer compounder
Customer since 2021
We switched our entire bulk packaging contract to IBR after a 90-day trial. Three years in, the math still works.
Operations director, Midwest 3PL
Customer since 2022
I once asked for a closed-loop fleet sized for a 12% leakage rate. They modeled 18% to be safe. The leakage came in at 14%. Their math saved my year.
Packaging lead, auto-stamping shop
Customer since 2020
They told us 'no' on a job and recommended a competitor better suited for it. We've never forgotten.
Plant manager, Indiana fabricator
Customer since 2019
Their ESG reporting is the only one I don't have to double-check before it goes in our annual report.

Questions buyers ask first

Short answers, honest ones.

How quickly will I get a quote?
Inbound forms get a written quote inside one business day, Monday through Friday. About 60% land inside four hours.
What's your minimum order?
One pallet (typically 20–50 boxes depending on size). Below that we'll point you to a local big-box reseller — we're not the right shop for a single-box need.
Do you do recurring orders or standing programs?
Yes — many of our largest accounts are standing orders. We lock pricing for 90 days at a time on standing programs above 200 boxes a month.
Can I tour the yard?
Yes. Walk-ins are welcome during business hours. If you want a guided tour, send a note ahead so we can have a yard manager available.
Do you ship to Canada?
Yes. International shipments use ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets and standard cross-border BOL paperwork. Lead time adds about 3 business days for customs.
What payment terms do you offer?
Net-30 standard for established accounts. Net-60 by arrangement on volume programs. Credit card, ACH, and check all accepted. PO payable on receipt for new accounts.
What if my order arrives different from what I bought?
Email us within five business days of receipt. We'll send a replacement, refund, or credit — whichever fixes it. We have honesty as a house rule for grading and we stand behind every grade we sell.
Can you do branded print?
Yes — 1 to 4 color flexo print on new virgin kraft. For used boxes, we offer kraft-overlay branding that masks previous-owner print.
Do you have a phone number?
No, and we've explained why on the blog. Form submissions and email are how we work; replies inside one business day are the contract.
Can I sample one box before ordering 200?
Yes. Single-pallet sample orders are how a lot of programs start. The pricing per box is higher on the sample tier, but it's a fair way to test fit.
