What exactly is a gaylord box?
A gaylord is a large, heavy-duty corrugated box — typically the size of a standard pallet footprint (40×48) or larger, in heights from 24" up to 60". They're used for bulk shipping of industrial product. The name comes from the Gaylord Container Corp., which dominated the market in the 1940s–60s.
How is a gaylord different from a regular box?
Two big differences: wall thickness (double or triple wall vs single) and footprint (sized for a pallet). A gaylord is engineered to ride a forklift and carry 1,000–3,000 lbs. A regular shipping carton is engineered to ride a UPS truck.
What's an octabin?
An eight-sided gaylord. The octagon shape resists bowing when filled with shifting product (powders, pellets, liquids in liners) and packs about 11% more volume on the same pallet footprint. Industry favorite for resin and food powder.
Used or new — what's the actual quality difference?
A B-grade reconditioned gaylord performs identically to a new one for most reuse cycles. Where used falls short: food contact, medical/pharma, regulated chemical, cleanroom, and branded retail. For everything else, used is the smarter buy.
What sizes do you stock?
Standard 40×48 footprint in heights of 36", 42", 48", and 60"; 48×48 footprint in 48" and 60"; half-height 18" and 24"; octagonal 48Ø in 40" and 48". Plus oddballs. See the full sizing guide.
Can I see boxes before I buy?
Yes. Walk-ins to the Rockford yard are welcome during business hours. Just send a note ahead so we can have someone available to show you the grades you're considering.
Who pays for pickup when I'm selling?
Inside our routed footprint (IL, WI, IA, IN, MI), we typically pickup at no charge for full-pallet quantities. Outside the footprint, freight is netted against the buy price.
What's your minimum order to buy?
One pallet (typically 20–50 boxes depending on size). Below that, we point you to a local big-box reseller — we're not the right shop for a single-box need.
Do you ship outside Illinois?
Yes — we ship to the entire lower 48 via TL, partial, or LTL. Routed pickups are limited to our five-state footprint.
What's the lead time?
Same week for in-stock used boxes (typically 3–5 business days). 3–7 days for new boxes. 7–10 days for custom builds.
Do you accept credit cards?
Yes — credit card, ACH, check, or net-30 with an established account. Net-60 on volume programs by arrangement.
Can you handle a closed-loop / returnable program?
Yes. We run several. Talk to us about your routes and volume.
What if my boxes are dirty or damaged?
Don't pre-sort or pre-clean. Send us photos. We grade and price on what we see; sometimes 'dirty' is just dusty and grades B. Sometimes 'pristine' is structurally compromised. Photos save everyone time.
Are you certified for recycling chain-of-custody?
Yes. We can provide SFI / FSC chain-of-custody paperwork on request, plus EPA-aligned waste manifests for recycled streams.
Do you have a phone number?
No — and we built the business intentionally on email and form submissions. It lets every yard manager actually keep their hands on the boxes instead of a phone receiver. Send a form, you'll hear back inside a business day.
What's the difference between B and C grade in practice?
B-grade boxes look like good used boxes — square corners, clean flaps, full structural rating. C-grade has visible cosmetic wear (a bent flap, a corner crease, a logo bleed-through) but still meets full structural rating. Both are fine for reuse; B looks better.
Do you offer same-day shipping for emergencies?
We can stage and dispatch within 24 hours for line-down emergencies via expedite freight. Premium applies. Email us with the situation and we'll move.
Can you handle a returnable container program?
Yes — closed-loop programs are about 18% of our outbound. Talk to us about route volume, leakage rate, and program duration; we'll model it honestly.
What's the markup on a custom build?
Typically 30–60% above stock used pricing depending on complexity. We share the build math on quotes so you can see where the cost lands (die, run length, refinish, etc.).
Do you offer financing?
Net-30 standard; net-60 by arrangement on volume programs. We don't offer term financing — that's not our space.
What sizes do you NOT stock?
Sub-pallet-footprint boxes (smaller than 36×36), very tall builds above 72", and any non-corrugated material. Anything outside those constraints, we can usually find or build.
Do you sell pallets standalone?
Yes — see /products/pallets. Standalone pallet orders are welcome; minimums apply.
Are there volume discounts?
Yes, in three steps: single pallet, half truckload, full truckload. Standing orders (200+ boxes/month) get an additional locked-pricing tier.
Can you build to UN spec for hazardous goods?
Yes for new boxes. 4G and 4GV compliant builds available; certification paperwork included per shipment.
Will the recycled boxes look 'used'?
Yes. B-grade looks used. A-grade looks nearly new. C-grade looks visibly used. If aesthetics matter, spec A or new.
Do you take back boxes I bought elsewhere?
Yes — if they're in our region and reasonable quality. We'll buy them at the same rates we use for our standard inbound.
Can I get an automated re-order trigger?
Yes for standing-order customers. We can set up automatic re-order at a stock threshold with confirmation by email.
What's the warranty on a new box?
Replacement of any structural failure within 30 days of receipt under normal use. Damage from misuse (stacking beyond rated capacity, water exposure) is not covered.
Do you offer expedited custom builds?
Yes — for 2x premium we can compress a 10-day custom build to 5 days. Limited by mill capacity at the moment of order.
Can you ship internationally to Mexico?
Yes, via our freight partners. Lead time adds 4–6 business days; customs paperwork is the customer's responsibility but we provide commercial invoice templates.
What's the largest single order you've fulfilled?
About 8,400 boxes in a single dispatched program for a 2020 PPE customer. We can scale to similar size with 6–8 weeks of notice.
Do you offer printed pallet tags or labels?
Yes — adhesive labels, hangtag tickets, or stamped pallet codes. Charged per unit; minimums apply.
Can you stage product into our customer's location, not ours?
Yes — drop-shipping to the end destination is common. Tell us in the quote where the boxes are actually going.
Will you sell to a competitor of mine?
Yes. We don't take exclusivity agreements outside formal closed-loop contracts. We sell to anyone in the right industry.
Do you sponsor or donate?
Selectively, in our Rockford community. Email Eli directly if you have a specific local initiative.
Can you accept a custom contract template?
Yes — we sign customer-supplied MSAs and SOWs regularly. Send the template; we'll redline or sign as appropriate.
Is there a customer reference list?
We don't publish one (most customers don't want their packaging vendor publicized) but we can share verified references on request, with the referenced customer's permission.
Can I order partial truckloads?
Yes — partial truckload (PTL) for 6–14 pallets, LTL for less than 6, dedicated TL for 18+. Each tier has different freight economics; we'll show you which is best for your route.
What's the lead time for octagonal builds?
Used octagonal in stock ships same week as standard. New octagonal mill orders run 7–10 business days.
Can you provide carbon documentation per shipment?
Yes. Every invoice can include avoided embodied carbon and shipment transport carbon. Ask for the carbon block to be appended.
